Industry Information
Student Eligibility
Undergraduate and K-12 level students are recruited to participate include the San Diego MESA Alliance campuses of:
- University: San Diego State University.
- Community colleges: Grossmont, Imperial Valley, Mesa, Miracosta, Miramar, San Diego City, and Southwestern.
- and various middle and high schools in the San Diego and Imperial Valley counties.
Students that register will be matched by the STEM Shadow Day Coordinator based on major/interests, meeting company eligibility requirements, and/or applicable campus specific logistics. Students active in the MESA program are given registration priority.
Requested Information
The registration form will cover hosting questions, desired student demographics, any eligibility restrictions, documentation requirements, and other logistics. Please note some personal information is protected by the FERPA Act and cannot be disclosed by the STEM Shadow Day Coordinator unless needed for security clearance.
Liability Agreements
Students are provided with insurance coverage by their respective campuses or school districts. High school students under the age of 18 have their parent/guardian(s) sign permission slips authorizing their school to release students for participation in STEM Shadow Day. The registration form will cover teacher or staff chaperone inquiries. If industry hosts require liability releases to be signed as well, it is preferred to have students sign industry host release forms prior to STEM Shadow Day, but understand that in some cases, must be signed at the industry host location during the morning check-in of STEM Shadow Day.
MESA can cover the photo/media release via our generic form, unless industry hosts require students to complete their company specific version.

2025 STEM Shadow Day Timeline
- Late July - Friday September 5, 2025: Industry registration.
- Monday September 15 - Friday October 3: Student registration.
- Wednesday October 8: Students receive e-mail confirmation if registration accepted or rejected (due to ineligibility, etc.).
- Wednesday October 15 - Friday October 17: Students are matched to companies; with requests for identification and other documentation.
- Tuesday October 21 - Friday October 24: Matched students are sent to industry.
- Monday November 3 - Friday November 7: Student preparation meetings.
- Tuesday November 11: Veteran's Day holiday.
- Thursday November 20: STEM Shadow Day!
- Thursday November 27: Thanksgiving holiday.
Industry Registration Options
2025 STEM Shadow Day registration will be available late July 2025 and close Friday September 5, 2025. Registration can be completed online via our Google Form, or you can download a fillable .PDF version to your device and send as an e-mail file attachment.

Experts work closely with Miltenyi offices across the globe to provide product management, customer training, application development, and technical support for platforms and reagents that empower the advancement of biomedical research and enable cell and gene therapy.

This includes regulatory oversight of a wide variety of facilities (wastewater treatment plants, stormwater systems, military sites, etc.), water recycling/reuse projects, water quality monitoring, and environmental restoration activities. This work supports sustainable water supply and improved water quality of our beaches, rivers, creeks, and groundwater.
Eligibility: 8 college level and/or high school students, 18 years of age or older, resume.

environmentally responsible waste disposal for businesses and municipalities throughout San Diego County since the 1960s. Located in Chula Vista, the Landfill is permitted to handle approximately 6,700 tons of waste per day, or 1.8 million tons annually.
Responsible landfill management involves the proper handling of landfill gas and liquids, which are byproducts of the decomposition of waste. It also requires science, engineering and technology to manage an evolving waste stream in a manner that is protective of the air, land and water upon which our communities depend.
At Republic Services, we have assembled a highly talented engineering and environmental management team comprised of more than 200 scientists, engineers and technicians. This cadre of experienced professionals uses science and data as the basis for decision making at each of our landfills.

DOE Project
Controlling contamination of microalgae used to produce biofuel with Sandia National Lab and ASU. The
R&D activities include maintaining algae cultures, developing natural antimicrobials, and testing the effect of the treatments on algae challenged with pests.
DOD Project
Controlling microbial contamination at an Air Force Base water filtration system. The remaining R&D
activities include testing the compatibility of the treatments with the filtration media.
Internal R&D
R&D of natural antimicrobials produced by marine bacteria. The R&D activities include cultivating the marine bacteria to produce the natural product.
NASA Project
Controlling microbial contamination of bacteria that contaminate the ISS water reuse recycling system. The R&D activities including designing a follow up experiment to launch to the ISS to test Aequor's treatments in microgravity.

Harris' San Diego environmental team studies potential environmental impacts of client projects, analyzes possible least damaging alternatives/solutions, and produces various environmental documents.
