Industry Information

Student Eligibility

Undergraduate and K-12 level students are recruited to participate include the San Diego MESA Alliance campuses of:

  • University:  San Diego State University.
  • Community colleges:  Grossmont, Imperial Valley, Mesa, Miracosta, Miramar, San Diego City, and Southwestern.
  • and various middle and high schools in the San Diego and Imperial Valley counties.  

Students that register will be matched by the STEM Shadow Day Coordinator based on major/interests, meeting company eligibility requirements, and/or carpool logistics.  Students active in the MESA program are given registration priority.

Requested Information

The registration form will cover hosting questions, desired student demographics, any eligibility restrictions, documentation requirements, and other logistics. Please note some personal information is protected by the FERPA Act and cannot be disclosed by the STEM Shadow Day Coordinator unless needed for security clearance.

Liability Agreements

Students are provided with insurance coverage by their respective campuses or school districts. College students are required to sign a liability release, which covers their respective schools and MESA programs. High school students under the age of 18 have their parent/guardian(s) sign permission slips authorizing their school to release students for participation in STEM Shadow Day. The registration form will cover teacher or staff chaperone inquiries. Industry hosts may require liability releases to be signed as well. It is preferred to have students sign industry host release forms prior to STEM Shadow Day, but understand that in some cases, must be signed at the industry host location during the morning check-in of STEM Shadow Day.

Industry Registration Options

2024 STEM Shadow Day registration can be completed online via our Google Form, or you can download a fillable .PDF version to your device and send as an e-mail file attachment.

Collins Aerospace
Collins Aerospace site in Chula Vista specializes on the nacelle component on commerical aircraft.  Design, manufacture, and provide customer support to various airplane components that are currently flying all over the world. 
Eligibility:  12 college level students, 18 years of age or older, government issued photo I.D. required.
Agenda:  9:00-1:00 pm in Chula Vista.
Harris & Associates
San Diego Engineering Design team focuses on water, sewer, and storm drain projects.  Other work include hydrology studies, drone aerials, map utilities, and more.  The Configuration Construction Management team oversees a variety of construction at school project sites.
Eligibility:  4 college level students, 18 years of age or older.
Agenda:  9:00-1:00 or 2:00 pm in (2 different field sites, locations TBD).
Hazen & Sawyer
Hazen & Sawyer is a civil engineering firm that focuses on all things water, from drinking water to wastewater.
Eligibility:  2 college level students, 18 years of age or older.
Agenda:  10:00-2:00 pm in (location TBD pending field site(s)).
Hologic
Hologic's diagnostic solutions to promote early detection, better treatment, and stronger results by delivering scientific precision to healthcare providers and patients.
Eligibility:  12 college level students, U.S. citizenship/naturalized citizens.
Agenda:  9:30-1:30 pm in Sorrento Valley area.
NAVAIR FRCSW
NAVAIR Fleet Readiness Center Southwest delivers timely, effective, and sustainable naval aviation capabilities to ensure the warfighter's mission success and safe return home.  North Island is home to the Fleet Support Team for the F/A-18 and E-2/C-2 platforms.  Engineers and logisticians work to maintain, repair, and overhaul Naval aircraft to support the defense of our nation.
Eligibility:  12 college level students, 18 years of age or older, U.S. citizenship/naturalized citizens.
Agenda:  8:00-2:00 pm in Naval Air Station North Island.
Northrop Grumman
Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems (AS) is an innovative manned and unmanned air system provider, with a proven track-records of system engineering, manufacturing excellence and reliability.
Mission Systems (MS) is a top provider of mission solutions, primarily communications and networking technologies, ensuring global security by enabling customers to observe and act faster than adversaries.
Eligibility:  24 college level students, 18 years of age or older, U.S. citizenship/naturalized citizens, government issued photo I.D. (drivers license must have REAL ID).
Agenda:  9:00-2:00 pm in Rancho Bernardo and Kearny Mesa.
Qualcomm
Area of specialization for this visit will be on the semiconductor industry, microchips for laptops, cellphones, Snapdragon products, and more.
Eligibility:  12 college junior and senior level students, U.S. citizenship/naturalized citizens or Permanent Resident.
Agenda:  9:30-3:00 pm in Sorrento Valley.
Raytheon
RTX is a defense company servicing the government programs.  The San Diego sites specializes in Navy and USCG ships with emphasis in whole life of ships, network, GPS, and more.
Eligibility:  4 college junior and senior level students, U.S. citizenship/naturalized citizens, government issued photo I.D.
Agenda:  8:30-3:00 pm in Kearny Mesa.
Republic Services
Otay Landfill has provided safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible waste disposal for business and municipalities throughout San Diego County since the 1960's.  Responsible landfill management involves the proper handling of landfill gas and liquids, which are byproducts of the decomposition of waste.  It requires sciences, engineering, and technology to manage an evolving waste stream in a manner that is protective of the air, land, and water upon which our communities depend.
Eligibility:  12 any class level students.
Agenda:  9:00-12:00 pm in Chula Vista.
RICK
Formerly Rick Engineering Company, RICK departments include:  civil engineering, community planning, water resources, transportation engineering, traffic engineering, GIS/3D laser scanning, landscape architecture, and more.
Eligibility:  12+ any class level students.
Agenda:  9:00-3:00 pm in Mission Valley.
SCS Engineers
SCS Engineers are the national leader in planning, permitting, investigating, designing, constructing, and operating landfill gas (LFG) control and recovery systems.  Our experience in solid waste, landfill design-build, environmental compliance, and long-term operations and maintenance enhances our integrated services.
Eligibility:  8 high school junior or senior, college level students.
Agenda:  9:00-3:30 pm in Kearny Mesa (site visit to landfill is closeby).
San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board
The Water Board is a state regulatory agency that enforces federal and state clean water laws.  The Water Board also regulates storm drain systems, wastewater treatment plants, the reuse of recycled wastewater, the cleanup of contaminated groundwater, etc.
Eligibility:  7 college level students, 18 years of age or older.
Agenda:  9:00-3:00 or 4:00 pm in Mission Valley (potential site visit TBD).
Water Innovation & Reuse Lab
The Water Innovation & Reuse Lab (WIRLab) at SDSU conducts research on environmental challenges in water scarce environments, sustainable water and sanitation technologies, and fate and transportation of contaminants in water and soil environments.
Eligibility:  2 high school level students, photo I.D. required.
Agenda:  9:30-2:00 pm in San Diego State University.
